Have you ever dreamed of immersing yourself in the magical world of Barbie? Well, now you can in Milan. Starting from September 13, 2024, until January 19, 2025, you’ll have the chance to visit Barbie: A Cultural Icon Exhibition. This collaboration between Next Exhibition and Mattel will showcase over 500 dolls dressed in iconic outfits created since the first doll was introduced in 1959.
It’s a true journey through the fashion trends of the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s, featuring iconic pieces mostly designed by the official designer Carol Spencer and culminating with the unveiling of the iconic 65th-anniversary dolls in 2024.

Throughout the exhibition, the spaces will be transformed into a magical world recreating the most iconic elements of the Barbie universe, from the legendary Dreamhouse to her fabulous pink car. To make the experience even more memorable, visitors will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the world of Barbie and Ken with two life-sized selfie stations, perfect for capturing stunning photos to share on social media.
Last year, the hashtag #barbiecore went viral, propelled by the release of the movie starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie that captivated audiences worldwide. Millions of videos showcased trendy pink-themed looks and outfits inspired by the film’s iconic fashion.

Barbie, short for Barbara Millicent Roberts, has had many outfit changes over the years. The designs from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s are particularly noteworthy. During this time, multiple designers from various regions like the Midwest, African America, and Southeast contributed to her wardrobe. Each design was meticulously crafted with attention to detail.

Curious to draw inspiration from some of Barbie’s most iconic outfits that have not only left a mark on the fashion industry but also become symbols of their respective eras? Scroll down the article to discover all of them!

1960s: Barbie’s classic debut look

On March 9, 1959, the first Barbie made her debut with her blonde hair tied back in a ponytail and was dressed in a black and white striped swimming costume. This iconic swimsuit reminds me of the classic styles of that era, and it also appeared in the 2023 film.

1980s: trailblazing diversity with African American and Latina Barbie

In 1980, Mattel released the first official African American Barbie, along with a Latina Barbie doll, marking a pivotal moment in Mattel’s history. This milestone is highlighted in a Netflix documentary, emphasising the importance of representing diverse skin tones in the doll industry.
The African American Barbie was dressed in a long red dress cinched at the waist, inspired by the iconic style of the beautiful singer Diana Ross.

Barbies negras ao redor do mundo 🌎 Em 1980, a Mattel lançou a linha Dolls Of The World (Bonecas ao redor do mundo). 1990s: Barbie President and the new empowerment

Did you know she once won the election? Over the years, our hero has embodied various roles—from veterinarian to nurse and even astronaut. However, one role that has left a lasting impression is Barbie as President. The first Barbie president came out in 1992. Her portrayal has contributed, even if only symbolically, to promote women’s empowerment. Would you consider buying one? While they may be rare, you might be able to find one at a dedicated museum this September!

2022: Balmain and our queen’s fashion fusion

Would you ever wear an outfit totally inspired by Barbie? In 2022, Olivier Rousteing made the big announcement: a collaboration with Barbie, launching a ready-to-wear clothing and accessories line to celebrate the impact Barbie has had, and continues to have, on fashion.

The trademark Barbie pink collection also featured the iconic logo combined with the aesthetic of the French brand Balmain. I wonder if there are any still around! Maybe you could find some rare pieces and turn yourself into a fashionista Barbie for a day.
