Before moving to Florence, I dreamed of buying all my groceries at local markets to soak up that authentic Florentine vibe. Especially as a student on a budget, I’ve discovered that the more you buy local, the more budget-friendly it becomes.

Where Locals Buy Healthy Groceries in Florence

Mauro Frutta Primizie: Fresh Produce & Local Charm in Florence

Located near the Palazzo Vecchio, you’ll discover a charming little hidden store called Mauro Frutta Primizie. As you approach this incredibly cute shop, you’re welcomed by the fragrance and vibrant colors of the fresh produce displayed outside. But it’s not just the fruits and veggies that greet you—it’s also the owner’s impeccable singing voice, happily keeping time with great beats. That’s when you know it’s worth stopping by.

He is extremely friendly, and whenever I buy fruit, he always offers to wash it if I want to enjoy it while strolling around the city. Although this shop is petite, I’m certain you’ll find what you’re looking for—and possibly more. From fresh produce to olive oil and an extensive selection of wines, this place truly has it all. Walking into Mauro Frutta Primizie is always a delightful experience. A must-visit for everyone.

Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio: A Traditional Italian Market Experience

Open since 1873, Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio is the oldest market in Florence. This isn’t your typical shopping trip — stepping into this magical place, you’ll truly feel like a local. You’ll find all kinds of meat and plenty of fresh produce, and the best part is that everything is locally sourced. If you’re on a budget, this market is your best friend. The close relationship between customers and shop owners creates a personal shopping experience. They always make sure you find exactly what you’re looking for, and to me, that means a lot.

Mercato Centrale: Where Locals and Tourists Meet

A well known market in the heart of Florence is Mercato Centrale. Located where the famous San Lorenzo leather market is and minutes away from Santa Maria Novella train station. There are two floors to this marketplace. The second floor is dedicated to food stalls. Many options ranging from gelato to tapas and fresh meal options for on the go. A very popular lunch spot for all. The first floor is dedicated for grocery shopping. Fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits are always a must here. Everyone is extremely nice and helps you with any doubts you may have creating a welcoming environment. I always see myself coming back especially for the fresh fruits.

Whether you live a holistic lifestyle or are just starting your wellness journey, Sugar Blues is the place for you. This grocery store is located outside the city center, across the Arno River. It offers a wide variety of cereals, baking goods, and milk alternatives for those who are lactose intolerant. I’m confident anyone can find products suitable for various dietary needs here. The staff are kind, welcoming, and always ready to assist with whatever you might need. One thing that really stood out to me was their selection of organic laundry detergents for sensitive skin—something I personally appreciated as someone with sensitive skin.
